Return once again to the timeless account of the Permian Panthers of Odessa--the winningest high-school football team in Texas history. Odessa is not known to be a town big on dreams, but the Panthers help keep the hopes and dreams of this small, dusty town going. Socially and racially divided, its fragile economy follows the treacherous boom-bust path of the oil business. In bad times, the unemployment rate barrels out of control; in good times, its murder rate skyrockets. But every Friday night from September to December, when the Permian High School Panthers play football, this West Texas town becomes a place where dreams can come true. With frankness and compassion, H. G. Bissinger chronicles a season in the life of Odessa and shows how single-minded devotion to the team shapes the community and inspires--and sometimes shatters--the teenagers who wear the Panthers' uniforms.

For the first time, the remarkable couple depicted in The Blind Side tells their own deeply inspiring story First came the bestselling book, then the Oscar-nominated movie—the story of Michael Oher and the family who adopted him has become one of the most talked-about true stories of our time. But until now, Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy have never told this astonishing tale in their own way and with their own words. For Leigh Anne and Sean, it all begins with family. Leigh Anne, the daughter of a tough-as-nails U.S. Marshal, decided early on that her mission was to raise children who would become "cheerful givers." Sean, who grew up poor, believed that one day he could provide a home that would be "a place of miracles." Together, they raised two remarkable children—Collins and Sean Jr.—who shared their deep Christian faith and their commitment to making a difference. And then one day Leigh Anne met a homeless African-American boy named Michael and decided that her family could be his. She and her husband taught Michael what this book teaches all of us: Everyone has a blind side, but a loving heart always sees a path toward true charity. Michael Oher's improbable transformation could never have happened if Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy had not opened their hearts to him. In this compelling, funny, and profoundly inspiring book, In a Heartbeat, the Tuohys take us on an extraordinary journey of faith and love—and teach us unforgettable lessons about the power of giving.

Amid the chaos of civilians fleeing west in a provincial German railway station in 1945, Helene has brought her seven-year-old son. Having survived with him through the horrors and deprivations of the war years, she abandons him on the station platform and never returns. This is a tale of hope, loneliness and love; of a life lived in terrible times; the story of a family, an era, and a fascinating woman. 'This is a great big silence-breaker of a novel, a laser beam into the German darkness from a writer who, one feels, has a great deal more to say' Evening Standard 'Admirable...inspired and haunting' Times Literary Supplement 'Franck's command of the language of misery and loss is awesome, but so is her gift for describing the warmth of burgeoning life when things are going right' The Times 'A rich, moving and complex novel... Julia Franck may well have written a great novel' Scotsman 'The Blind Side of the Heartis a masterpiece, in an exquisite translation by Anthea Bell' Arts & Book Review

Quicklets: Learn More. Read Less. Michael Lewis was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the year 1960. He attended Princeton University and graduated with a BA in Art History. After a few years in the banking industry, Lewis left his lucrative position to write his first novel, Liar's Poker (1989) and to find work as a financial journalist. Liar's Poker was a semi-autobiographical novel focused on Lewis' experiences at Salomon Brothers. He continued the financial theme in his sophomore novel, The New, New Thing (1999) before transitioning to the sports-centered theme found in The Blind Side with his novel Moneyball (2003), which focused on the success of Billy Beane and the Oakland A's. Lewis' success has been far-reaching. As a regular contributor for such periodicals as The New Yorker, The New Republic, Slate, Conde Nast, and Vanity Fair, famed novelist Tom Wolfe called Lewis one of the two top "writers to watch" in 2010. The Blind Side is the story of high school footballer Michael Oher rising from the clutches of poverty to rise to fame as a first-pick draft choice for the NFL. When the book was first released in 2006, it quickly became a New York Times bestseller. In 2009, the book was adapted into a film. The film earned a slew of award nominations, from the Teen Choice Awards to the Academy Awards. Sandra Bullock, who portrayed the tough-as-nails Leigh Anne Tuohy, won an Oscar.
